Description
Replica trowel made from EPNS and with resin moulded handle.
Decorative engraving on upper surface of tine with leaf motif. Inscription on surface "PRESENTED TO/ William Lyall Esq. J.P./ BY THE/ COUNCIL AND OFFICERS/ OF THE/ SHIRE OF CRANBOURNE/ on the occasion of his laying/ THE MEMORIAL STONE/ OF THE/ SHIRE HALL/ 6th March 1875". Inscription on reverse of tine "Replica of original trowell(sic) presented to/ William Lyall Esq., J.P./ 6th March 1875"

Resin handle shoes spiral leaf motif and topped with an acorn finial. Resin has been snapped into two pieces at some points and reglued together.

Plaque. Brass with inscription "THIS SILVER TROWEL WAS PRESENTED TO/ WILLIAM LYALL/ BY THE CRANBOURNE COUNCIL/ ON THE OCCASION OF THE LAYING OF THE/ MEMORIAL STONE AT THE ORIGINAL SHIRE OFFICES/ ON MARCH 6, 1875/ THE TROWEL WAS PRESENTED TO COUNCIL IN 1978/ BY THE LYALL FAMILY/ TO HOLD IN SAFE CUSTODY ON DISPLAY/ FOR HISTORICAL INTEREST"

The plaque was made to commemorate the gift which was given to the Cranbourne Council. The replica trowel was used on the occasion of moving and laying the original foundation stone mentioned on the trowel for the new offices in 1976. The building opened in 1978.
