Description
Oil painting on plywood, depicting a hilly landscape scene with an airfield, aeroplanes, buildings, trees and a train. The work is inscribed, dated and signed by the artist in the lower right corner.
A typed page attached to reverse of frame on right side lists the details of the painting, and reads ""Casey Airfield", and Berwick Village beyond./ This oil painting was done from Golf Links Road/ in the summer of 1979./ The following features are depicted:/ 1. The Casey Airfield with hangers and planes on/ the Aerodrome./ 2. The Bluestone Quarry is behind the trees left/ of the drone./ 3. Buchanen Park to the right of the Aerodrome hangers./ 4. The Villani family picking their annual crop of peas/ from the paddock in the foreground./ (the By pass now runs through part of this paddock./ 5. The old Railway Station, prior to being burnt down/ in 1980. Also the silver train of that era./ 6. Top right, Casey's property "Edrington" with water/ tanks and hay sheds on the hill./ 7. St. Margaret’s School. (about centre of painting)/ 8. Top centre: Wilsons Hill with development/ just started."
Casey Airfield was established in 1938 by Colonel Rupert Ryan, the brother of Lady Casey, when Berwick was still a small country town. The airfield closed in 1994 when, due to the rapid development of the area, the site was repurposed for the construction of the new Berwick Campus of Monash University.
